In ancient times Palea Epidavros was linked to the sanctuary as the port via which many pilgrims travelled to Asklepieion. Today, many tourists take advantage of the idyllic village that seems to be almost entirely surrounded by lemon and orange groves, often as a base to visit the area, having arrived in Greece at Venizelos Airport of Athens, which is about one and a half hours drive away, depending on traffic, from the village - 80 km on the motorway, 55 km on a rather tortuous A road.

At Nisi on the peninsula, which divides the Bay of Palea Epidavros into two halves, there are still significant remnants of the ancient city to visit. At the top of the acropolis are the remains of an imposing wall, which most likely surrounded a citadel, probably dating from the Byzantine period. At the southwest corner of the acropolis, archaeologists have unearthed the remains of a small amphitheatre with about 15 rows of stone seats and the foundations of a theatre building. It is believed that a sanctuary to Dionysis was linked to this theatre. Additionally, extensive remains of house building have been discovered in the ancient area of the peninsula.
Mycenaean tombs, which were excavated in the centre indicate that the area was already inhabited during this period of ancient Greek history.
Remains of other ancient buildings are visible on the southwestern tip of the peninsula close to the sea and a little further south the remains of a Roman estate can been seen under the sea, off the beach.
